West Bengal News

The West Bengal Panchayat Polls of 2023 were marred by violence, with 16 people losing their lives, ballot boxes being vandalized, and incidents of bomb attacks on rivals in various villages. This violence is in line with the state's history of tumultuous elections, including the notorious 2003 panchayat polls, which saw a death toll of 76 and over 40 deaths on the day of the elections.

Since the announcement of the polls last month, a total of 30 fatalities have been reported, following a pattern similar to the violence witnessed during the 2018 panchayat polls. The voting process began at 7 am across 73,887 seats in rural areas, involving approximately 5.67 crore voters and 2.06 lakh candidates. By 5 pm, a voter turnout of 66.28 percent was recorded.

The State Election Commissioner, Rajiva Sinha, has assured that complaints regarding vote tampering will be investigated. Reports from observers and returning officers will be taken into account to decide on potential re-polling. Sinha acknowledged that the highest number of complaints regarding violence during polling came from four districts, and these incidents will be thoroughly reviewed.

Despite facing criticism from various political parties, the SEC stated that a decision regarding re-polling will be made after careful scrutiny and assessment of the polling process by observers and returning officers on the following day.
