"Violence Mars West Bengal Panchayat Polls: 12 Dead, Ballot Boxes Vandalized"

The panchayat polls in West Bengal concluded amidst widespread violence, resulting in 12 fatalities, vandalism of ballot boxes, and the use of bombs in several villages.

Among the deceased, eight belonged to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), while one each were workers from the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress. The casualties occurred overnight during the crucial three-tier panchayat polls.

The voting process commenced at 7 AM across 73,887 seats, involving approximately 5.67 crore people and around 2.06 lakh candidates. By 5 pm, a voter turnout of 66.28 percent was recorded. The election encompasses 63,229 gram panchayat seats, 9,730 panchayat samiti seats across 22 districts, and 928 zilla parishad seats in 20 districts.

However, Darjeeling and Kalimpong have a two-tier system with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and Siliguri Sub-divisional Council at the top.
