McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has responded to Mercedes' comments regarding the similarity of their MCL60 upgrade to Red Bull's RB19 bodywork. After Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured second and third place in qualifying for the British Grand Prix, Mercedes and Ferrari were taken aback, prompting Lewis Hamilton and Silver Arrows Team Principal Toto Wolff to mention the Red Bull-like sidepods on the McLaren. Stella clarified that all teams draw inspiration from one another, but it does not mean they copy each other's geometry for their simulations or wind tunnel tests. He emphasized that some concepts may have more potential for development, allowing for faster and longer progress. McLaren has undergone changes in its engineering team, with former Red Bull aerodynamicist Peter Prodromou now leading the aerodynamic development. Stella praised Prodromou for his exceptional job in setting the conceptual direction and inspiring the entire aerodynamic group at McLaren.
