West Bengal News

During the West Bengal panchayat polls, which are crucial three-tier elections, at least nine people have lost their lives. This is not an isolated incident, as the 2018 elections saw 13 deaths as well. Unfortunately, politics in West Bengal is often tainted by violence.

The polling for these significant elections began at 7 am on Saturday amidst widespread violence and killings. The outcome of these polls has the potential to reshape the political landscape of the state and serve as a test for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.

West Bengal is notorious not only for its rich cultural heritage, including renowned writers and movie producers, but also for the prevalence of election-related violence. When the election dates were announced on 8 June, the state witnessed several incidents of violence. According to PTI, around 15 individuals, including a teenager, lost their lives in these incidents.

To address the issue of electoral violence, Governor C V Ananda Bose established a "Peace Home" at the governor's residence, where complaints from locals could be addressed. This marked the first active involvement of Raj Bhavan in addressing the matter. The governor himself visited violent areas to provide comfort and support to the victims and their families.

The elections offer a total of 73,887 seats, including those for zilla parishads, gram panchayats, and panchayat samitis. To facilitate voting, 61,636 booths have been set up. However, due to uncontested victories in some areas, 1,043 booths, accounting for 10 percent of the total, will not be used for voting.
