In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, actor and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi shared details about her relationship with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. She revealed that Shekhar had cheated on her during their marriage and discussed the challenges they faced as a couple. However, Suchitra expressed her belief that marriages do not break solely because of infidelity, but rather due to a lack of respect. After 12 years of marriage, Suchitra and Shekhar separated in 1999.
Suchitra gained fame through her role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. She disclosed that Shekhar did not want her to continue acting. Despite coming from a non-filmy background, Suchitra started receiving film offers while still in school and college. She mentioned that she received the offer for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa during her college years.
During the interview, Suchitra shared that as a teenager, she was infatuated with Shekhar and had resolved to either marry former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan or Shekhar Kapur. Their paths crossed when Shekhar was casting for a film called Champion, which was never released. Suchitra was 19 years old at the time.
Suchitra explained that they continued to meet, and her love for Shekhar grew, while he was not serious about the relationship. However, Suchitra, being conservative, gave Shekhar an ultimatum, stating that she would not see him again unless he married her. She managed to convince him, and they tied the knot when she was 22 years old. However, their marriage faced opposition from her parents due to their age difference and Shekhar's previous divorce. Suchitra's parents suggested she have an affair to get over her infatuation, but she was determined to marry Shekhar despite their disapproval.
During the first year of their marriage, Suchitra contemplated leaving, but her plans changed when she discovered she was pregnant with their daughter, Kaveri Kapur. She felt it was fate's way of intervening and decided to stay for a few more years. However, she eventually reached a point where she realized it was not working for her and decided to end the marriage, prioritizing her own happiness.
